Honoring Maria Garcia

Dear Korematsu Community,
As many of you know, Korematsu lost one of our beloved teachers this year, Maria Garcia. Maria taught 3rd grade at Korematsu until June of 2019 after a long and wonderful career in our Davis schools. Sadly, Maria lost her battle to pancreatic cancer late this summer. She is sorely missed by many. Below, you will see quotes and thoughts about Maria from her colleagues, friends, and parents of some of her students. Also, below there is a way for you to donate in honor of Maria.

To honor Maria, donations can be made in her name to:

The Sacramento Zoo:
One of Maria’s passions was for endangered species. She taught amazing lessons about endangered species to her 3rd grade classes. In order to honor her and give to the education, research, and support of endangered species, we are setting up this fundraiser to donate to the Sacramento Zoo. With a $1,200 donation to the Sacramento Zoo, they will put two brass paver with an inscription about Maria in their Rare Feline Center courtyard, alongside the walkway in front of the big cats, or in front of the chimpanzee exhibit.

We would love to be able to support Maria in this way and honor something she felt passionate about! Any donation amount is appreciated. As soon as we have met the $1,200 amount, we will send it to the Sacramento Zoo in Maria’s name.

To UC Davis Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Many of our staff were fortunate enough to know and work alongside Maria for many years. Below are different thoughts and memories from her dear friends and colleagues
at Korematsu.
